I. Description of Problem or Issue

The issue our group decided to research was that of sexual education. The issues that currently are part of the sexual education dilemma include the age at which students are being taught. Are they being taught too young, old or is the current age the correct age range? Are they mature enough to deal with the concepts being talked about in their classrooms? Are they even sexually active at this point? Sexual Education also has a lack of funding in certain areas as well as a lack of a straightforward curriculum to be taught throughout. In regards to the curriculum are they being taught what needs to be taught to be effective or are they being taught only one style of sex ed thus limiting their education.

II. Research Summary

Our research looks at Sex Education in Public Schools, the styles taught, it’s funding as well as the appropriate age to teach Sex Education.
Alejandro’s research focuses on the difference between comprehensive sex education and abstinence based education
Marlee’s research focused on the appropriate age that sex education should be taught and what when the student is mature enough to learn about these concepts.
Steve’s research was based on sex education and the proper funding. The difference between abstinence based funding, comprehensive funding and the various areas that receive more or less funding, and why that occurs.
Ashley’s research was on demographics affecting sex education in schools. Should it be a factor for a proper sex education, if so , why is it?

II. Group Product Overview

Lesson Plan:

Activity: See who is for abstinence based teaching and who is for comprehensive teaching. Then split the class in two and hold a debate as to why they feel that way. (5-10 minutes)

Direct Instruction: What is sex education? Are schools receiving the proper funding for sex education? At what age should sex education be taught and why? Should sex education be affected by demographics in school? Should schools teach abstinence only, or should they be more comprehensive based? What are the benefits of sex education? Powerpoint.(10-15 minutes)

General Recap: Students may ask us questions. We will also ask them questions and we are going to see if any of the students have changed where they stand on sex education.
